Outline Online Interview

Norwich based Outline recently spoke to Jez about the upcoming Thetford Forest show. As well as talking about the Thetford gig, the interviewer asked some interesting questions for a change. There may be a hint as to what to expect in the future outside of Doves..

You recently announced a two year break from touring and recording and I wondered what your thinking was behind that?

The main reason is to get off the carousel of tour, studio, tour, studio, tour, studio which just got a bit boring. We’re gonna do some individual projects and then hopefully come back and do the Doves fifth album with something to bring to the table. I think we all need to do individual things for our own sanity really. We’ll come back revitalised ‘cause we’ll have been to different musical territories than we would with Doves so it’s gonna be a good thing.

Are you going to be doing individual music projects or will it be other stuff?

Well we’ll be doing music separately but I can’t tell you anything about it yet.

You were Sub Sub before you were Doves. Have you ever been tempted to release a dance track under an alter ego?

Well that might be part of one of our projects outside Doves, so you might see that, yeah.

There’s been a rumour floating around for a while that you’re going to be doing something with Guy Garvey. Is that still on the cards or has it gone on the back burner?

Yeah that could still be on the cards, absolutely. We’re good mates with Elbow so that could well be a reality.

Not a whole lot going on..

As you probably guessed, not a great deal going on in doves world. I have been enjoying the Delphic record. Great news for those of us at the wrong side of the pond, Delphic have been anounced to play Coachella so here’s hoping for a few more shows stateside.

Doves are mentioned in today’s Guardian write up on Delphic and other new Manchester based bands. Hope to catch Delphic (doves would be nice too….) at this year’s Lollapalooza festival here in Chicago.

Cherry Ghost have also put up some new tunes in unmixed form up on the myspace page. Black Fang sounded great live last year, could be a single I reckon?

I see Hooky is opening up a new club in Manchester. FAC251 opens up next month. I wonder what the chances of a doves gig there? Spaceface opener! Would make allot of sense with the history and all. But just pure speculation on my part!!

Sub Sub

The response to yesterday’s Senana post was pretty good, cheers to those of you who wrote. Got a number of requests for the Sub Sub albums & tracks such as Spaceface. I wont be uploading the albums sorry. The band may decide to release these someday, so out of respect for that, I wont ever be sharing those on the blog. Though to be honest, there not that hard to find online anyways.

Spaceface is available to buy on the Hacienda Classics compilation album (pictured) that was released a few years back. Available to buy at all good CD/online mp3 stores.

Tracks such as Ain’t No Love & Past are also available to buy on various CDs/download stores.

Ok back to present day doves.. A few of you have noticed I started a Picasa gallery. Its very much an early work in progress, but your welcome to take a look.

Senna

Last week I posted a low quality vinyl rip of the Sub Sub track Senna from the Angel 12″ vinyl. I asked if anyone had a better quality version, and you came out trumps..

Ally wrote letting me know that Senna was also featured on the German CD single release. This I did not know of! Hope to track down a copy of this someday soon (if anyone has a copy they would be willing to sell email me). So..

With many many thanks to Ally, I can offer up Senna taken from the CD single..

Lost Sub Sub Gem: Senna

Ever since starting this blog back in Febuary, the most requests I get is for music from doves previous incarnation Sub Sub. Up for download today is a track long forgotten about…

I have offered up the Coast EP previously, just do a search to find that in the archives. Related to Coast is a track titled Senna which was featured on the Angel 12″ double pack in 1994. Senna is an early alternate version of Coast, which was retitled as a tribute to Ayrton Senna.

Please note the quality of this rip is really bad! But as this track has been requested so often, I will offer up this poor quality mp3, straight from my own vinyl so you can at least get a sample of this track. If anyone wants to offer up a better quality mp3, I’d love to hear from you!

Senna

Enjoy!

Joe Roberts & Melanie Williams

A few weeks back I was sent an email, asking if I knew what Melanie Williams (Ain’t No Love Love – Sub Sub) was up to these days. At the time I did not have the foggiest to be honest! Fast forward a couple weeks, today I was listening to Joe Roberts 1993 album Looking For The Here And Now (great album btw!) Curious as to what Joe was up to these days, I found out that he & Melanie Williams together are making music and have been for quite awhile. Their latest project is called Butterfly Jam.

It also seems as if Jimi is still jaming with the two of them! Jimi featured on Joe Roberts said 93 album playing guitar & backing vocals. The two go way back when they were a band called The Risk as teenagers, Jimi’s first band. Joe later provided backing vocals on the Sub Sub track Southern Trees.

Listen to Butterfly Jam tracks at their myspace page here. Well worth a visit, Joe’s voice still sounds as awesome as ever. If your down south, you can catch them live at the Putney Half Moon on November 5th.

Read an article on Butterfly Jam at manchesterconfidential.co.uk here.

If you need reminding how good the Joe Roberts album is, check out the track Love Is Energy which features Melanie Williams vocals & Jimi on guitar here.

DRIP DRIP

So yes the album leaked yesterday. Its actually been on a certain site for awhile, but due to watermark issues it didn’t hit the mainstream sites until today. Hopefully those of you who have downloaded the album are enjoying it. Its a gem of an album. Don’t forget to buy your copy April 6/7 wherever you are. The artwork is beautiful.

I will post my own review sometime in April. I may be able to avoid name dropping Elbow! :)

Coast EP

Dan, via the comments box has suggested a track I should upload. The track being Senna from the Angel 12″. I have this vinyl. sadly it is 4000 miles away in storage. So if anyone is able to rip this track and is willing to share. Leave a comment or drop me a line at arcmorality@gmail.com

Failing that. When I’m back in the UK, I will bring this back with me and share. I’m also on the look out for the Todd Terry Spaceface remixes and good bitrate versions of the Lost Souls demo tracks Analog Bass & Blues Tune. I have lower bitrate versions I’m willing to share, but I would much prefer to share better quality versions. Thanks!

Here is a Sub Sub EP I can share right now..
