interview
Doves @ Splendour In The Grass
Earlier today, doves performed at the Splendour
Jimi spoke to tripleJ radio earlier. Some of it has been featured on a blog post “Doves Last Blogcast”.
Here’s a bit of the interview:
When did you get to Byron – any time off on this tour? What’s your impressions so far?
we landed in byron at about 1.00pm today straight from Japan so we haven’t had a chance to see this amazing town this time round ( but we were here in 2005 and had a few days off and had a great time)

Glastonbury Interview & Audio
To
doves spoke to the Guardian’s Alex Needham yesterday, before taking the stage. You can listen to the rather hilarious interview here.
To settle the argument. We have it that doves have played Glastonbury seven times, including last night. Here’s what we have:
1998: New Bands Tent
1999: The Other Stage Opened
2000: New Bands Tent Headline
2002: Pryamid Stage late Friday afternoon
2003: The Other Stage Headline Sunday Night
2005: Pryamid Stage Friday Night
2009: John Peel Stage Headline Friday Night
All of doves performances except 1998, were broadcast by the BBC. Including last night’s performance:
Thanks to gibbo1968, here are ten tracks as aired live on BBC Radio. Video will follow over the coming days.
Doves Almost Never Flew
Doves
After a shambolic appearance at Glastonbury in 1998, the boys nearly split up following their first festival.
Frontman JIMI GOODWIN said: “We came home with the worst hangover and we just got the horrors.
“We had a meeting in the pub… It was ridiculous.
“We’d not even put out our first single and after all the hardship of SUB SUB (their former band) and all of the ups and downs, we come home from Glastonbury with a bit of a hangover and decide before we’ve even put anything out to split up!”
Jez Speaks to The Vine
Ahead
Four years is a long time in the music industry and even longer when it comes to technology. What was it like coming back and suddenly needing a MySpace, a Facebook, Twitter, free downloads et al?
We literally went away and the whole music landscape changed. Giving away a free download was a new one for us. It’s pretty mad really but once you get your head around it, the whole new digital domain makes sense in its own strange little way. It’d be nice to get paid for each record we sell, but most people seem to download it for free now, don’t they?
And then they justify it by saying ‘it’s okay, I’ll see them when they play live” but you can only play so many shows a year.
A lot of bands make their money that way but for us to come to Australia, it costs twice the amount we make from tickets. It’s a fucker, man. To be honest I wish our Australian tour was longer but somebody didn’t put their neck out. Some bright spark reckoned we should only do four shows but I think we could have done the whole east coast.

Question: Deciduous or Evergreen?
Answer: Evergreen. Because it’s fresh and invigorating.
Jez Advises Fans To "Get Ready"
In a recent telephone interview with phillyBurbs.com,
The Doves, who also includes vocalist-bassist Jimi Goodwin and Jez’s brother/drummer Andy Williams, believe that “Rust” is a good stepping-off point for the band.
“It’ll be interesting where we can go from here,” says Williams. “I think that ‘Rust’ proves that we can do anything we want to do. We challenged ourselves a great deal this time because we’re not content to put out the same old thing. It worked out as well as we could have ever hoped. It’ll be interesting to see what we do next. Just get ready for it.”

Jimi Interviewed For Epilogue Magazine
Online culture magazine, Epilogue,
There’s so many great tidbits in this interview, such as: Jimi wanting to host “mix tapes” at Doves’ official site, but being unable to do so, due to copyright restrictions; and how touring the U.S. actually loses them money…
Do you think more bands will do the Radiohead, In Rainbows style of release?
I keep hearing that and that people will only put out singles from now on. A lot of bands get to a certain situation now, where the only time they can make any money is by touring. We come out to America, and we might even be paying out of our own pocket by 5-$10,000, just to come and play. You don’t get any tour support anymore. We obviously try to limit that to happening as least as possible because we have families and everything. There is a cutoff point where I am like, “We can not afford to do this.”But then, it is better when you are playing in England.
Yeah that’s the only place where we can get a little bit of a wage so to speak.

Jimi Recalls Rob Gretton
Toronto-lifestyle magazine, Now
“The man was basically a philanthropist,” remembers bassist Jimi Goodwin. “He bankrolled us and gave us a second chance as Doves. Without him, I don’t know where we’d be.”
